Nell: The Next Issue

Rafi's cover came back from the school printer with his name clear beneath the drawing.

He held the first copy by its edges, as though the ink might still be deciding whether to stay. I recognised the expression. It was the one I'd worn over the guide boxes, the one I'd worn seeing my Beacon report online. Wanting your name beside something you made was not vanity by default. Sometimes it was simply wanting the work to arrive with you still attached.

“Good?” I asked.

He nodded. “The left edge is there.”

“We kept it.”

“I can see.”

He smiled and took a copy for his mother.

The issue wasn't perfect. A match report ran long. One headline was weaker than I'd hoped. We had to correct a club-meeting time before printing the rest of the copies. Nobody died of these imperfections. We made the changes, recorded them and moved on.

After the meeting, I stayed behind to put the room back. Taz came in carrying two tickets for the youth company's performance.

“Real date. Real place. No scheduling excuses.”

I checked the date, put it in my calendar and paid her for the tickets before the money could become an awkward conversation later. One was for me. The other was for Mum, who had already declared herself a supporter of anyone willing to learn that many lines voluntarily.

“You look busy,” Taz said.

“I am.”

“Good busy?”

“Mixed. Human variety.”

She sat on a desk, ignoring the sign that discouraged it. “And Kit?”

“Good. Coming home later this month.”

“Have you prepared an itinerary?”

“Restrained myself.”

“Historic.”

The flood-marker piece took longer than I expected. The date mattered, but so did the temptation to make the old town sound simpler and kinder than the records suggested. Some people had been helped quickly. Others had waited. The newspapers named business owners more readily than the families renting rooms above them. I could point out the difference without pretending I knew every missing story.

Rosa read the draft and sent questions rather than congratulations. I answered them. The final piece was shorter, more careful and more alive than the first version.

When it ran, I took Gran a printed copy. She put on her glasses and read the part where I had quoted her uncertainty about the photograph.

“You've made me sound indecisive,” she said.

“You were uncertain.”

“I know. It's accurate. I'm just not used to seeing it in print.”

Then she smiled and asked for another copy for a friend.

On the way home, I stopped at the passage. The brass markers were still there, unnoticed by most people moving through. I stood beside them without taking out my phone. The town had not become more interesting because I was leaving it someday or because Kit had already gone. It had been interesting while I was waiting for something else to begin.

My phone vibrated.

Kit had sent the train time for Friday.

I smiled so openly that a woman passing with a shopping bag smiled back, assuming she had been included. I didn't correct her. Some misunderstandings were harmless.

At home, I made a small plan for the weekend and then removed most of it. Kit would want to see her parents. Luca had his performance. She might be tired. I did not need to fill every hour to prove that coming home was worthwhile.

When Mum asked whether I wanted to swap my Saturday shift, I said no. I could work in the morning and see Kit afterwards. The world did not have to stop being ordinary for our time together to count.

On Friday evening, I met her outside the shop after her dad brought her back from the station. She looked tired, pleased and slightly surprised by how much the street hadn't changed.

I hugged her before either of us found a line.

“Hello,” she said into my hair.

“Hello.”

That word kept getting better through repetition.
