The Hand Record

They sheltered that night in a shepherd's empty summer hut, with permission bought from a woman who cared more about whether they would leave the roof intact than why they were travelling.

Pella took the first watch. She said it as a decision, not an offer, then went outside with her grandfather's packet inside her coat.

Ada sat beside the small fire and opened the hand-record case.

Cal looked up from cleaning the cut on his own knuckle.

“Want help?”

“No.”

She tried to draw the outline of her right hand with her left. The result looked like a badly remembered animal.

Cal waited.

“Yes,” she said at last.

He moved beside her, close enough to see the page without touching her knee. She gave him the charcoal.

“Just the outline.”

He drew carefully while she held her hand flat. Then she used the blunt pin to test the skin. Pressure, light touch, the difference between one point and another. Most of her fingers answered. The tip of her thumb remained distant, as though it belonged to a glove she could not remove.

Cal shaded the area she described.

“Will it come back?” he asked.

“Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't.”

“What did Ysra say?”

“Not to decide numbness was courage.”

He looked at the page.

“She sounds difficult to argue with.”

“She is.”

Ada flexed her hand. The thumb moved normally. That made the absence stranger. A part of her could still obey without being able to tell her what it touched.

“I knew the cost,” she said.

“Yes.”

“And I would do it again.”

“That doesn't mean you have to like the cost.”

She looked at him. Firelight moved along the scar at his jaw.

“Does everything you say become measured before you say it?”

“Usually. It's an unpleasant habit.”

“What would you say without it?”

He glanced towards the door, then back at her.

“That I was frightened when you were still writing and the platform started to fall. That I wanted to pull you away before you finished, even though I could see people were still on the ramp. That I didn't enjoy discovering which part of my courage was mostly theory.”

Ada's throat tightened.

“You stayed.”

“So did you.”

Outside, Pella spoke softly to the mule. The animal answered with a sound of profound dissatisfaction.

Ada smiled despite herself.

Cal watched the smile, and something in his expression changed. Not dramatically. Enough that she stopped thinking about the hand record for a moment.

“What?” she asked.

“I was trying not to look at you like that.”

“Like what?”

He gave a quiet, disbelieving laugh. “You know.”

She did. The knowledge made the small hut seem warmer and less safe in an entirely different way.

He had been assigned to watch her. That fact had stood between them even after they left the official road. Now his warrant was suspended, her assessment terminated, and neither of them could give the other an order that would make the Hall take them home kindly.

“Would you still have come,” she asked, “if no one had told you to walk beside me?”

Cal's answer was immediate.

“Yes.”

She put the blunt pin down.

“Then stop trying so hard not to look.”

He leaned closer slowly enough that she could choose the distance too. Ada touched the front of his coat with her good hand. The first kiss was gentle and brief, more question than claim.

She answered by kissing him again.

For a few breaths, the kingdom became a smaller thing than the warmth of his mouth and the hand he rested lightly at her waist. Then the fire cracked, and Pella called through the door that anyone forgetting to eat would receive no sympathy in the morning.

Ada pulled back, laughing softly. Cal looked both pleased and startled, as though he had crossed a road whose arrival he had not trusted.

“This doesn't make any of it simpler,” he said.

“No.”

“Good. I was worried I'd missed a rule.”

She leaned her forehead against his for a moment.

“Not every good thing has to be a solution.”

They moved apart when Pella came in. She looked at the space between them, the hand record and Cal's expression.

“Oh, finally,” she said, and went to stir the pot.

Ada covered her face with her hands, then remembered the numb thumb and lowered them.

The cost remained. So did the warmth.

She wrote the date beneath the hand outline before she slept.
