The 23:14 Traveller

Every evening Vera sees the same woman standing on the footbridge outside her station café. A tin left behind leads her into an old story about the station. Then the photographer Anouk Meijer asks to see a delivery receipt: five boxes of her work were supposedly returned through the café. Vera recognises the signature on the receipt. But she remembers taking in only one flat folder. As they follow the collection's route, the questions begin to affect Vera's own business and the people helping her.

On Monday the woman left her tea untouched. Not just the bag, lying dry on its saucer, but the water in the glass as well. As Vera wiped the empty tables, she saw her put both hands round it. The last passenger train had left four minutes before the woman arrived. Now a car's headlights swept across the wet paving and disappeared behind the bicycle shelter.

‘You haven't put the bag in,’ Vera said.

The woman looked at her hands. ‘I know.’
